  • Interactive U.S. map shows economic impact of dairy exports in your state

    By USDEC November 19, 2019

Wisconsin's economy leads the country with more than 12,700 jobs from dairy exports alone.

How many jobs are generated by dairy exports in your state?

The interactive graphic below created by MILK magazine gives you that answer and more with a single click. With shading, it also provides data visualization of the states where dairy exports are most important to state economies.

Suppressed milk prices have made making ends meet difficult for many dairy farmers, with Wisconsin has led the nation in farm bankruptcies for several years. But the situation would have been worse without 12,700 jobs created in Wisconsin (shaded dark blue) from dairy exports, more than any other state.

California's economy (dark blue) has the highest overall economic impact from dairy exports -- $2.17 billion.

The map provides information on the:

    • Value of dairy exports.
    • Economic impact of dairy exports.
    • Jobs generated by dairy exports.

Calculations are estimates by the U.S. Dairy Export Council and National Milk Producers Federation based on 2018 data from the U.S. Department
of Agriculture and the U.S. Census Bureau.

Economic impacts are estimated using multiplier formulas from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. State job estimates do not include “spillover” jobs generated by exports originating in another state.

Nationally, U.S. dairy exports created more than 85,000 jobs, as shown in the fact sheet below.
