  • Opportunity beckons this USDEC expert at the World Dairy Summit in Chicago

By USDEC Staff June 8, 2023

USDEC spotlights Shawna Morris as one of its "experts on exports" for National Dairy Month.

When Shawna Morris is asked about the first World Dairy Summit in the U.S. since 1993, she nearly springs from her chair in anticipation.

"It's a once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape the narrative of this major meeting, to push our message out to a very large global audience so that we can highlight the fantastic job our industry is doing," said Morris, the U.S. Dairy Export Council's Senior Vice President of Trade Policy.

Morris is one of USDEC's "experts on exports," working for the "U.S. dairy export success accelerator" and its mission to "enrich the well-being of people, communities and the planet." In a series of articles and videos for National Dairy Month, some USDEC experts are stepping out from behind the scenes to explain their passion for serving the U.S. dairy industry.

On October 16-19, the International Dairy Federation World Dairy Summit will gather in Chicago. The world's largest dairy gathering was held in New Delhi, India, last year, where a ceremonial key was passed to Morris and USDEC's Nick Gardner, co-chairs of the 2023 Summit.

Dairy Management Inc., USDEC's parent organization, is the Summit's Diamond Sponsor.

The World Dairy Summit attracts an international gathering of more than 1,000 dairy-industry professionals. It provides a forum for farmers, processors, traders, journalists and others from around the world to discuss how to advance the collective global dairy sector forward in a positive, sustainable way.

"It's our opportunity to tell our story, to put our best foot forward," said Morris.

Among other things, it's a chance to tell the world about the growing success of U.S. dairy exports, which have broken records three years in a row as more and more milk is shipped across our national borders in the form of cheese and dairy ingredients.

Morris explains in her video how, on top of co-chairing the Summit, she has worked 20 years for trade policy that levels the international playing field for a U.S. dairy industry increasingly reliant on exports.

"This year's Summit in Chicago will be a showstopper," said Morris in a news release, "and the U.S. host committee can't wait to welcome everyone committed to being part of dairy's future in the United States and around the world. We know participants will love the action-packed agenda, and we can't wait to make lifelong memories together from the exhibit hall to the dance floor."
